MYA Soccer Coaches' Code of Conduct

Safety

1. The first responsibility is the health and safety of all participants.

2.  No coach should conduct a practice without at least one other adult being present (assistant coach or parent).  No coach should be alone with or transport alone any child who is not a member of his family.

3. It is recommended that coaches become certified in the basic first aid.  Be prepared to handle first aid situations as well as medical emergencies at all practices and games:


•  Have a properly supplied first aid kit & ice packs available and know how to use them;

•   Know the location of nearest emergency medical facilities;

•   Always carry emergency medical release forms and team safety and information cards

•   Follow up all injuries with parents/guardians

4. Inspect players’ equipment and field conditions for safety reasons.  Notify division coordinator or an MYA soccer board member about any hazards in your practice or playing fields.

5. Utilize proper teaching and instruction of players regarding safe techniques and methods of play.

6. Supervise and control your players to avoid injury situations.

Player Development   

1. Keep the importance of winning and losing in proper perspective.

2. Develop the players’ appreciation of the game.

3. Be sensitive to each child’s development needs.

4. Allow players to experience all positions.

5. Players need to have fun and receive positive feedback.

6. Practice should be conducted in the spirit of enjoyment and learning.

7. Provide the appropriate number and length of practice sessions according to the players’ stage of development.

8. Educate the players to the technical, tactical, physical and psychological demands of the game for their level.

9. Strive to help each player reach his or her full potential and be prepared to move to the next level.

Ethics

1. Be a positive role model.

2. Set the standard for sportsmanship with opponents, referees, administrators and spectators

3. Know and follow all rules and policies set forth by the MYA and/or travel leagues, as well as state and national associations.

4. Work in the spirit of cooperation with officials, administrators, coaches and spectators to provide all participants with the maximum opportunity to develop.

5. Know and understand the Laws of the Game.

6. Continue your own education in the sport to improve your skills as a coach.

7. The use of alcohol, tobacco or illegal drugs during MYA activities, including practices, is prohibited.
